Architect/landscape architect Mario Schjetnan will give a Max Z.Conrad Endowed Lecture Series lecture to the College of Art & Design on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 4:30 p.m.in 103 Julian T.White Hall Auditorium (formerly Design Building.)
Mario Schjetnan is a Mexican architect and landscape architect that manages to "unite social concerns, aesthetics and, increasingly, ecology- all by way of interpreting and celebrating Mexico's rich and diverse culture."He is co-founder of the interdisciplinary firm Grupo de Diseño Urbano in Mexico City known for designs in which the building is subordinate to the landscape.Among his numerous awards are the Prince of Wales/Green Prize in Urban Design for Xochimilco Ecological Park and theASLAPresident's Award for Excellence for Parque El Cedazo.
Schjetnan graduated from UNAM.hth华体会体育app官网He has a master's degree in landscape architecture and urban design from the University of California, Berkeley.He was awarded the Loeb Fellowship from Harvard University to pursue advanced environmental studies.
hth华体会体育app官网Through his work for more than 45 years, according to architecture critic Roberto Segre, Mario Schjetnan is "one of the greatest landscape architects in Latin America and the main representative of the Mexican school.His creations seek dialogue between tradition, modern culture, and nature."
hth华体会体育app官网His personal recognitions include: the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award 2015 awarded by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), the most important distinction that a landscape architect can receive in his lifetime, "for his lifetime achievements and unique contributions, which have had a lasting effect on the improvement of life in society and the environment, as well as for his promotion and support of the profession of landscape architecture to an international level"!the Elise and Walter A.Haas International Medal Award 2019 which honors an alumnus who is a native, citizen, and resident of another country and who has a distinguished record of service to his country!In 2021, he received the Medal of Merit in Arts, in recognition of a singularly exemplary life trajectory, as well as valuable works and relevant acts, for the benefit of humanity in Mexico City.
His projects have received multiple international awards, among which are:
– The President's Award of Excellence, recognition granted to Parque Tezozómoc by the American Society of Landscape Architects, ASLA.
– The Xochimilco Ecological Park won the Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design, from Harvard University.
