Distinguished Lecture Series Receives $200,000 from Alfred C.Glassell

The College of Art + Design has received a $200,000 gift for the School of Art Distinguished Lecture Series fund from renowned philanthropist Alfred C.Glassell.

"We're thrilled and honored that Mr.Glassell has once again shown his commitment to the arts at LSU by making such a generous gift to the Lecture Series fund," said David Conrath, Dean of the College of Art+Design.

The Glassell gift will go a long way toward helping the School of Art Distinguished Lecture Series fund as it strives to build an endowment of $250,000.The gift from Mr.Glassell is the lead gift in the endowment!an additional $50,000 is still needed.Once fully endowed, the School of Art will have $10,000 per year for a lecture program in art that will bring nationally and internationally acclaimed graphic designers, art historians, as well as fine artists to the LSU campus for the benefit of students and the general public.

The School of Art Distinguished Lecture Series is part of an effort by the College of Art + Design to expand the learning environment.It provides an opportunity for internationally acclaimed artists and scholars to encourage risk taking among students, excite their appetites for thinking and making, and nurture their capacity to create.This distinctive public education program also reaffirms the College's land grant mission while increasing cultural capital through service to the Louisiana arts and cultural community.

Alfred Glassell is a long-time supporter of the arts at LSU.He underwrote the cost of bringing the African gold collection to Baton Rouge for the opening of the LSU Museum of Art in the Shaw Center.He also made recent generous donations to the College of Art + Design, as well as to the LSU Museum of Art.

"It has been a pleasure getting to know Mr.Glassell," said Michael Robinson, senior director of development for the LSU Foundation."He has a genuine love and respect for the University, which he generously expresses through his giving."
